Objectives

To advance the objects of the Indian Medical Association, which are:

  • To promote and advance medical and allied sciences in all their different branches and to promote the improvement of Public Health and Medical Education in India.
  • To maintain the honour and dignity and to uphold the interest of the medical profession and to promote co-operation amongst the members thereof.
  • To work for the abolition of compartmentalism in medical education, medical services and registration in the country and thus to achieve equality amongst the members of the profession.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Banaras Branch is a vibrant and dedicated community of medical professionals committed to advancing healthcare standards and fostering unity among doctors in the Varanasi region. As a part of the national IMA network, we uphold the highest principles of medical ethics, professional excellence, and social responsibility.

Oldest branch of India even older than IMA HQ New Delhi, established with the vision to support, guide, and empower medical practitioners, our mission is to create a collaborative platform where healthcare professionals can exchange knowledge, address medical challenges, and contribute meaningfully to society.

We regularly organize scientific seminars, workshops, health awareness programs, medical camps, and social outreach activities to ensure the well-being of the community while keeping our members updated with the latest developments in the medical field. History of IMA Banaras Branch

The IMA Banaras Branch has a proud legacy shaped by decades of dedicated service. Established through the efforts of visionary physicians, the branch began with the mission of creating a united platform for medical practitioners. Over the years, it has grown into a respected institution known for its scientific programs, community health initiatives, and unwavering support for doctors. From early health camps and disease awareness drives to its remarkable role during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Banaras Branch has consistently stood at the forefront of healthcare improvement. Its journey reflects progress, resilience, and a deep commitment to the well-being of society.

  • 1918Doctors’ Club formed at Kashi Club with Founder Members:
    Dr. Sripal Sahai, Dr. Amar Nath Bannerjee, Dr. L.N. Rai, Dr. Shobha Ram & Dr. (Capt.) S.K. Chaudhary.

  • 1920 – Dr. B.G. Sanyal, Dr. K.P. Lahiri & Dr. Gopal Prasad join the Club.
  • 1920 – Club has 20 members and registered as “Banaras Medical Association”.
  • 1928 – Constitution revised to align with Central IMA.
  • 1934Banaras Medical Association becomes Founder Member of Provincial Branch of U.P.
  • 1936 – Dr. (Mrs.) B. Thungamma elected to Legislative Assembly.
  • 1936 – Dr. (Capt.) S.K. Chaudhary becomes U.P. Medical Association President.
  • 1948 – Dr. (Capt.) S.K. Chaudhary becomes President of IMA (HQ).
  • 1951 – Dr. (Mrs.) B. Thungamma elected U.P. State IMA President (First Lady President).
  • 1953“Aapka Swasthya” magazine launched.
  • 1954 – Dr. S.N. Mukherjee becomes U.P. State IMA President.
  • 1955 – U.P. Government allots land on lease at Lahurabeer.
  • 1956Foundation stone of IMA building laid by Hon’ble CM Dr. Sampurna Nand.
  • 1957 – Maharaja Chet Singh Hall & 3 rooms inaugurated.
  • 1959 – Dr. Bhola Nath becomes President, IMA U.P. State.
  • 1963IMA (HQ) takes over journal “Aapka Swasthya”.
  • 1965 – Dr. K.P. Tiwari becomes IMS U.P. State President; Dr. Bhola Nath becomes Vice President IMA (HQ).
  • 1966 – Dr. Bhola Nath becomes President, IMA (HQ).
  • 1967 – Family Planning Centre started at V.S. Mehta Hospital.
  • 1968 – Dr. Bhola Nath presides over 22nd Commonwealth Conference, Singapore.
  • 1969 – Dr. S.C.L. Srivastava elected U.P. State President; State Conference held in Varanasi.
  • 1971Shopping complex constructed with earnings dedicated to community services.
  • 1973 – Dr. B.S. Mehta elected U.P. State President.
  • 1974 – Dr. B.S. Mehta elected Vice President IMA (HQ).
  • 1976Immunisation Centre established; Shopping Complex expanded.
  • 1977 – Lions Club donates Ambulance; Ambulance Service begins.
  • 1977 – U.P. State Best Branch Award & All India Merit Certificate received.
  • 1979 – Dr. N.L. Agarwal elected U.P. State Secretary; Dr. M.A. Siddique Treasurer.
  • 1980Oxygen Bank started.
  • 1981 – Dr. N.L. Agarwal becomes U.P. State President; Best Branch Award (All India).
  • 1981Second floor added; Dr. Bhola Nath Guest House inaugurated.
  • 1981First IMA Banaras Branch Directory published.
  • 1982Lions Club Vishal donates Blood Bank.
  • 1984First official Calendar printed.
  • 1985 – Dr. K.P. Tiwari & Dr. B.S. Mehta receive National Dr. B.C. Roy Award.
  • 1988Cancer Detection Centre inaugurated.
  • 1990 – Two Ambulances donated by Lions Club & Jan Kalyan Trust.
  • 1999 – Dr. Prabhakar Shukla elected U.P. State President.
  • 2003–2008 – Dr. O.P. Tewari serves as U.P. State Secretary.
  • 2014Dr. B.C. Hall constructed (200 seating capacity).
  • 2017SDP Unit inaugurated by Hon’ble CM Yogi Adityanath Ji.
  • 2019–2020 – Dr. Ashok Rai elected President IMA U.P. State.
  • 2024–2025 – Historic year with 10 Awards at UPICON 2025 under leadership of Dr. S.P. Singh (President) & Dr. Arun Kumar Tripathi (Hon. Secretary).
  • 1. Best Local Branch of IMA UP State.
  • 2. Best Local Secretary of IMA UP State.

  • IMA Banaras Branch organised successful 2nd State working meeting at Varanasi after a long gap of 17 years.
  • Amendment of new BYLAWs of IMA Banaras Branch.
  • 62-kilowatt SOLAR Panel installed.
  • Extension and updating of Blood Center at IMA Banaras branch .
  • Process started for high rise 7 storied buildings including two storied parking and all amenities.
